I’m Not a Scientist, Man!

The 2012 presidential election is barely over and Republicans, still in the process of licking their wounds, are casting about for a viable candidate to run in 2016. And, according to rumor, at the top of the list is the Freshman U.S. Senator from Florida, Marco Rubio.

Marco Rubio is not a scientist, man!

…and Marco Rubio is a member of the Senate Subcommittee on Science and Space! Recently, Mr. Rubio was interviewed by GQ Magazine‘s Michael Hainey. In the middle of the interview, and seemingly out of nowhere, Mr. Hainey asked Rubio, “How old do you think the Earth is?” with which Rubio answered, “I’m not a scientist, man!” Clearly puzzled by the question, Rubio went on to reaffirm that he’s not a scientist, that he doesn’t know if the earth was created in seven days, as he was taught in church, or in seven eras, whatever that might be and that, in any case, science has nothing to do with the economy. What’s most ironic is that NASA is under the purview of Mr. Rubio’s subcommittee and it’s NASA which has officially declared that, based upon, um, science, the earth is roughly 4.49 to 4.59 billion years old (that’s nine zeros, Marco). That’s a lot of eras, man.
